Last night Evan came home from Hunter’s Run, with Kit badly cut and the cutter smashed. Patty is laid up with her foot in Poultice, so we are short of horses. We have had unbroken sleighing since the 2nd of December, and our Ice House has not yet been filled. Mother Elisha Evan and Tom are all home and we are reading “A Yankee At Arthur’s Court I am very well FRIDAY 2 Morning 40 11-38 Four oclock 32 Evening 28 It had poured buckets all night and was foggy in the morning, at eleven oclock the thermometer fell and it began to snow and by after dinner the thaw seemed to be ended. having thawed the snow down to about a foot in the woods and eight inches in the clearings Evan and I went to hear the Cantata in the afternoon SATURDAY 3 Morning 11 Noon 18 It was a very still cold morning about an inch of snow had fallen in the night and Mother and I went up town with a petition about Memorial Day. It is now a beautifully clear sunny still afternoon [6] SUNDAY, JANUARY 4, 1891 Morning 4 Noon 11 Evening 10 The coldest day this year and the trees covered with the most beautiful frost feathers We went to Church in the morning and the Sunday School had 136 children and 16 teachers In the evening Evan and Miss Hayes being absent at Clarks Mills and Elisha at the Kanes holm tree Mother Tom and I went to Church MONDAY 5 Morning 9 ½ 11 11 ½ Afternoon 21. A very cold morning turning into a lovely cold day Mother and I went round with the petition right after breakfast. I also went to the Bank and changed my Sunday money I lay on the bed in the afternoon In the evening Mother went to Prayer Meeting and while she was away James Watts came TUESDAY 6 A beautiful clear cold day. Mother was out all the morning. Elisha gone to Bradford and I in bed. Yesterday Florry pumped with Evan into a Borrow pit full of water A nice letter from Florry telling of Mary’s wedding at which poor Cousin Sam was present though proped in a chair [7] WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 7, 1891 Noon 20 Another clear cold bright day, but being in bed I could not look at the thermometer. James went to Hushekua for the first time, and at tea time the drying shed of the Brushblock Factory took fire As Mother is taking the petition round and as it is the week of prayer I see almost nothing of her THURSDAY 8 Morning Ther 10 Another lovely clear day spent in bed Last night the Drying House of the Brush Black Factory took fire and the boys were at work till ten and got their hands burned FRIDAY 9 Morn 21 Noon 33 Cloudy sunshine, got up after breakfast Have a good deal of headache. Elisha in Bradford [12] THURSDAY, JANUARY 22, 1891 A dismal rainy sloppy day FRIDAY 23 Spent the day redding up for Miss Houston who came in the evening The rain stopped last night and about two inches of snow fell SATURDAY 24 Afternoon 33 I drove Miss Houston up town in the morning and in the afternoon Tom took Mother Oella and I out sleighing up as far as Four Brothers. In the evening he took Oella moonlight drive [13] SUNDAY, JANUARY 25, 1891 Beautiful day. Mother and Miss Houston drove to Church I walked with Tom. James and Gardiner were in the Bible Class. Tom took Miss Houston a walk in the afternoon and she left in the evening train. Coming home from Church the sleigh broke down MONDAY 26 Snowing Wind Northwest Snowed about two inches I walked up Greaves Street to see Mrs Niff in the afternoon while Mother was caught at Swansons The snow was very soft. TUESDAY 27 Ther 44 An exquisite balmy day with a violent thaw and lovely sunshine In the afternoon Mother went driving with Mrs Neff I heard Miss Hayes a lesson and Tom drove me out to John Fredrick Andersons with Hippus. As it was raining I was left behind when the family went to Prayer Meeting THURSDAY 29 It is a warm thaw with a fog In the afternoon Mother and I walked down to a Missionary Meeting at Mrs Hubbards. In the evening we had a violent thunderstorm FRIDAY 30 Ther 31 It snows now and then and there is a very high wind. Mother and I are going up to the W.C.TU this afternoon Evan is going to the Dentist The sleighing is very poor I went with Mother to the W.C.T.U. and afterward to the Hospital to see a fingers cut off. It is spitting snow this afternoon The sleighing on its last legs MONDAY 2 Ther 28 Ground Hog Day Raw cloudy day spitting a little snow Elisha went off in the morning train to Bradford. Evan has a patient with O.T. and one with Meningitis at the Hospital Went to the Copperfield lecture in the evening Evan and Tom called out to attend cases James very sick with Athsma Mother will get from Aunt Mary $5.000 [16] TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1981 Pouring Ther Morning 40 Noon 28 Afternoon 24 Evening 15 All very seedy after last night At eleven the rain changed to sleet the wind sprang up and by afternoon we had a violent snow blizzard with a rapidly falling Thermometer. James came down to supper WEDNESDAY 4 Morning 1 above 0 Noon 9 Evening 3 above A very cold snow blizzard but with such fine flakes that only an inch or two has fallen However it has saved the sleighing. I swept the Parlor and printed photographs till dinner, after dinner I took to my bed and heard Miss Hayes her lesson in Obstetrics THURSDAY 5 Morning Ther 5 above Clear morning A clear morning using to a very fine day. Mother went away to the Ladies Aid in the afternoon Bed all day [17] FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1891 A lovely sun thaw all day I remained in bed Tom’s S. of V. gave a ball in the evening a Mother put to much pepper in the Potatoe Salad. The little G-girl who was ruined by Sheeby was confined today a very hard labor SATURDAY 7 Ther 29 I got up today. It looked like rain in the morning but about ten a heavy went snow came on driven by an easterly gale and at the present (3 P.M.) it has snowed three inches thus saving the sleighing which was on its last legs Evan drove me down to the gate in the evening to see the beautiful snow covered trees SUNDAY 8 32 32 There was a good deal of thaw in the night and a little crust on the snow but the sleighing is just perfect Tom and Evan have gone out on the Highland Road driving Alida and Hippus We went to the Congregational Church this morning as Mr Arney is away. I taught my Chinaman at S.S. [18] MONDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1891 Morning 33 Noon 34 Evening 34 Rained drearily all night long and all day and kept freezing We (Tom James Mother and I went to a Dime Social at Mrs Gev. Campbells in the evening The sleighing was fine though it had begun to cut TUESDAY 10 Morning 28 Evening 21 It has turned very cold and bitter this morning with a spitting snow from the N.W. After snowing all day it cleared up cold and windy and the train could not get out to Mr Jewett because of the drifts so Elisha could not come home WEDNESDAY 11 19 Noon 28 Perfect winter day. Evan drove me out to Highland to see the Gardiner girl (Ivah) and when we returned found Mother with a headache Mr. Jones the Congregational minister called and after he left she retired to bed. Elisha and Tom went out to the Mill by the morning train, to overhaul Swetlands accounts. Mother and I smelt fresh oil at the Gas works oil well James rode to lays Mill I heard Gussie Weeks her lesson this afternoon FRIDAY 13 Feb 13 Ther morning 28 Afternoon 38 Evening 28 Exquisite morning sun thaw, heard a Phoebe bird singing The first flower of the White Hyacinth is in bloom I was up with Mother to the afternoon W.C.T.U. The smallpox scare is spreading Evan vacinated the Kemps In the afternoon also Evan took off the Gustatson childs leg. H.P. very bad [the following is written up the left side of the page perpendicular to Friday’s entry] Little Miss Downs left SATURDAY 14 Morning 21 Afternoon 34 Evening 28 Another fine sunthaw day is setting in A just delicious day all day Mother and I drove up town in the morning and also in the afternoon Elisha and Tom were both at the Mill [20] SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1891 Morning 20 Noon 44 Afternoon 48 A real sunny spring day with a tremendous thaw We went to the Congregational Church in the morning My hyacinths, a yellow blue and white are out Evan and Tom drove to Highland in the afternoon. A heavy warm rain came on at dusk MONDAY 16 38 38 40 It has poured all night and thawed the snow dreadfully It poured and thawed all day and by night the sleighing was gone at the town after unbroken sleighing since the first of December. Swanson exploded today and the Swanson who was dreadfully burned was moved to the Hospital. The glass works well was torpedoed. TUESDAY 17 Morning 45 Noon 48 Afternoon 48 Night 46 The violent rain and thaw has continued all day. Elisha is in Smithport. Mother and I walked down to the embanksment during a short holdup this afternoon the brook is very large and the town site is bare In the evening Tom, Jim and I drove over in torrents of rain to the Methodist Social The sleighing was pretty nearly all gone beyond the end of the Weber Road [21] WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1891 Morning 33 Noon 28 Afternoon 24 It is freezing this morning and there is a wild wind and now and then a snow flake, we had an early breakfast so Evan could ride to Highland Mother and I went to the Burrough School in the morning. They are tubing the Glass works well this afternoon and we can hear it roar Evan took a sleigh out to the Lafayette Road but it was rough work THURSDAY 19 Morning 19 Noon 32 Afternoon 33 It was a clear morning and a cloudy afternoon Evan vacinated Mother Tom and I. In the afternoon Mother and I went to the Ladies Aid at Frank McConnell, and Mr. Arney who came back on the train told us we were to have two weeks of prayer FRIDAY 20 Morning 32 36 Evening 38 A wild wind and freezing rain with about an inch of snow. Heard Gussie Weeks her review on Physiology. A thick thaw mist all day. Mother and I walked up town in the morning and over to Hillborns in the late afternoon James Panting the (Dr Freeman-Wright-Evan man) died at midnight.
